Well, let's face it, it's cold outside right about now. I mean, not just a little chilly. I get that. But right now it's cold out there. So I choose denial at the moment, and I post this picture of a moment in time that was much, much warmer. It's 43 and dropping as I write this. Meanwhile, this photograph was taken on a warm sunny day when the temperature was more like 85 degrees and rising.

So I present a picture of the Butterfly Garden at Hammock Park, in Dunedin, Florida. A picture taken earlier in the year, showing how beautiful Dunedin can be, especially in her parks, and how warm and sunny the weather is here most of the year.

It's 44 degrees outside right now, and the wind is blowing like crazy! This is not at ALL Florida! :) I took this picture earlier in the year, and it seems like this might be a good time to post it. Just a warming reminder of warmer times and calmer weather.

This shot is of the boardwalk at my favorite local Dunedin city park, Hammock Park. It's a beautiful park right near downtown. Which means it's close enough to where I work that I can get there at lunchtime for a nice relaxing walk. On a day like today, however, I kept my walk to the few blocks close to work, so I wouldn't get too terribly chilled before I got back to the office. I know lots of you out there are lots colder, but the predicted 30's for tonight are really cold for this area. Keep warm folks!

I've said it before. It's no secret. I love Hammock Park in Dunedin, Florida. It's a wonderful, peaceful place to wander about and unwind. It's also a great place to see some wildlife, and enjoy some wooded areas that are more like what Florida should be, or used to be at least. I've been to the park a number of times for a lunch break, and it always brings a little more relaxation into the rest of my day than would be there otherwise.

If you are looking for a nice place to stop and get away from the frantic pace of work for a while, or a good place to get close to nature without having to drive for an hour or two, visit Hammock Park and learn what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Dunedin, Florida: Hammock Park Butterfly Garden Beautiful Red Flower

I had the pleasure of strolling the new Butterfly Garden at Hammock Park during lunch one day recently. It was there I came upon this brilliant, beautiful red flower. It reminds me of some sort of Hibiscus, but please don't quote me on that. Either way, it is a very pretty blossom, and I have no doubt that it must be quite attractive to butterflies.

The Butterfly Garden at Hammock Park was created by the Friends of the Hammock group, and is very nicely done. I suspect it will only become more and more wonderful as it becomes more established. This is a real treasure of a park, and I would encourage you to join Friends of the Hammock to help support it.

Dunedin, Florida: Midnight At The Oasis, Dunedin Marina At Midnight

Another shot from the last time I was lurking around Dunedin Marina at midnight. I love that place, and it only gets better at midnight. To see all the yachts and sailboats quietly 'nestled in their beds' for the night, with only the occasional whisper of a breeze, is really beautiful.

If you are ever in Dunedin, Florida, be sure to stop by and check out the Dunedin Marina, no matter what time of day it is. After all, it's a pretty place at noon too! :)

Sorry to break in with this news, but I want to make sure I let everyone know about this. I just saw the new movie, Skyline, this morning. I couldn't believe how bad it was. Bad acting, lame story, etc., etc., etc. So, just want to warn you to read more review before you go see it. It sucks. Really. It sucks.

Ya know, sewers are just one of those things... I mean, it's like, if you aren't in the 'trade', you don't probably think about sewers at all. Who thinks about sewers? I don't think about sewers at all. Never. Nobody spends time thinking about sewers. But let's face it... Dunedin has sewers all over the place, lots of sewers in Dunedin. But you don't think about them do you?

Having sewers all over, we don't think about them, we don't notice them... BUT... if we didn't have them, we sure would notice that! I spotted this sewer access cover, or whatever it is, on a recent walking photo safari in Dunedin, Florida and thought it would make an interesting photograph. I have this thing about taking photographs of infrastructure. Yeah, weird, eh?

And when you really get down to it, you would think that sewers have no place in polite conversation, certainly not in the world of your children's toys! And yet...

What's not to like about this house? It's got classic lines, a nice big porch for visiting, and a sweet paver path up from the street. Heck, that porch is floored with brick too. How often to do see a brick paved porch? Yeah, I don't know either, but it looks pretty cool.

But hey, if you prefer modern features, just peek around the left side there... looks like a screen pool enclosure if you ask me. Cool. All that style AND a pool! Nice. Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Marina At The Witching Hour: Midnight!

If a person would happen to be in such a place as the Dunedin Marina, oh say, around midnight, a person just might luck into a shot like this! Not as easy as it sounds, in as much as they have numerous very bright security lights around the marina. This makes it difficult to get a good shot that doesn't have an image-wrecking light shining right into the camera.

Ironically, it's that walking around peering this way and that while looking for the best shot that gives one just the kind of 'casing the joint' look that you really don't want to have at that time of night. That being said... the marina is a really cool place late at night, if you're not subject to getting the heeby-jeebies.

It was very quiet. The only sounds were some soft clinking of hardware on masts as they swayed gently in a light breeze, and the flags at Bon Appetit flipping about.

Dunedin, Florida: Eddies Bar And Grill And MONSTER TRUCK!

Have you been by Eddie's Bar and Grill lately? Well, let me tell you, things are not what they used to be... in the parking lot! Wow... I almost hit a curb trying to look over my shoulder at this beast last night. I just HAD to go back and try and get some pictures.

So I went in and asked for the manager. That's when I met Matt. Now, I've eaten at Eddie's several times, and always enjoyed it, but I'd never met Matt before. He turned out to be way cool, as would be expected from such a cool place as Eddie's. He even offered to fire up the smoke machines in the truck for me. Unfortunately, the wind was not cooperating, and kept blowing the smoke away. But I took a bunch of pics, hoping one would come close to showing you what I saw in person. It is a REALLY cool truck.

Dunedin, Florida: Rent A Tricycle, Get On The Pinellas Trail!

I snapped this photograph of these two tricycles, all set and ready for you to rent them, some time ago. Sadly, the last time I wandered through this area on 'photo safari', the shop was closed down. I believe they have moved, but I don't recall finding out where. So I will have to make a point of finding out where they went, so you will know too!

Meanwhile, the premise is still valid, sound, and appealing! Rent a couple of tricycles, assuming there are more than one of you, and get out on the Pinellas Trail and ride! When you are there, you will get to see some beautiful areas of Pinellas County, and Dunedin more specifically in this area, that you can't necessarily see from a car. Certainly you can't take the time to see it the same way in your car as you could from these tricycles.

If, after trying out some cool trikes like these, you should get the urge to own one for yourself, there are plenty out there, in various configurations and price ranges. Heck you can even get them on Amazon.com... At the starting range they have the Schwinn Meridian Adult 26-Inch 3-Wheel Bikewhich is your basic, upright styled adult tricycle. Next up from there, you can get the same basic style, but in a folding model like the Westport Adult Folding Tricyclefor example.

If you're like me, and you sometimes get tired of peddling, or if you just think it would be a lot of fun, you might even look into something with supplemental battery power like the Currie Technologies iZIP Tricruiser Electric Tricycle (24-Inch Wheels)model. But then, maybe you prefer that sleek, low-slung look, in which case you might be more interested in something like a TerraTrike Tour Recumbent Trikethat looks fast even sitting still.

Of course, if you are going on an outing like this, you don't want to forget taking something to drink. In that case, it might be good to have something to keep your drink cold, like a Thermos Stainless Steel Hydration Bottle. Yeah, sounds pretty technical, but if it can keep my drink cold for 12 hours, it works for me! Oh, and don't forget to take some pictures while you are out there. Dunedin, Florida: Autumnal Equinox 2010 - It's That Time Of Year: FALL

Yes, the Autumnal Equinox has come again. It's that time of year. It's Fall. Wahoo! Time for cool dry air and the changing of the color of leaves. Time to get ready for the holidays that make this time of year so very special. It's a virtual trifecta of celebration!

Let's count them down... First comes Halloween. The night of terror. No, not really... it's the night of fun and candy and cool costumes. I always look forward to Halloween because, to me, it marks the first holiday of the cool season, and I always want it to be crisply cool for trick or treating. I suspect this is a childhood thing, as I grew up in Virgina and remember that trick or treating was often delightfully chilly and the air was all about Fall and hinting of Winter and the rest of the holiday season.

Then comes Thanksgiving, the wonderful family holiday that inspires reflection and gratitude for all the wonderful things in our lives that we take for granted all year. Turkey Day also marks the next step toward Christmas, and usually promises even cooler temperatures than Halloween. Not to mention, as an adult, I appreciate that Thanksgiving is the first of the three winter holidays that actually comes with TIME OFF! That's right, now we are talking about paid holiday time from work. Yippeeeee!

Finally, we get to Christmas. Now we are solidly into cooler weather (in Florida) and more paid time off to enjoy family and the holiday season. It's that time of year when so many of us become practically giddy with the spirit of giving and the joy of the celebration of Christmas. It's wonderful.

And then, in case you might have forgotten, we actually get ONE MORE holiday... NEW YEAR'S EVE!!! Yup, after all that good fun, we get a little more time off and another excuse to cut loose. Time to celebrate the successes, or survival, of the year just ended, and time to celebrate our optimism about the new year just starting. Perfect!

Dunedin, Florida: Dog Mural Painting: Skip's Bar & Grill: Anna Hamilton

I took a photo stroll around Delightful Downtown Dunedin the other day, during my lunch break from my day job. It's always nice to get a chance to catch up with Downtown and see what's new. That's when I came across this woman painting dogs on the side wall of Skip's Bar and Grill. Interesting, I thought, and headed over for a closer look. That's when I met Anna Hamilton, mural painter.

It turns out that a neat idea for a wall mural turned into a local phenomenon, complete with support for the local Dunedin Doggie Rescue organization. Dunedin, Florida: Inviting Garden Swing Under A Shade Tree

No, it's not a terribly elaborate garden, but I find it very inviting just the same. The bench swing, the plants, the cool shade. All framed under and within the welcoming arms of a beautiful shade tree. When you are walking around in the hot summer heat, that we all love so much, it's nice to feast your eyes on an oasis of cool like this one.

This is not my garden I'm afraid, nor is this garden owned and created by any friend of mine. I spotted it while on walking photo safari in Dunedin, and thought you may enjoy it like I did... from a distance, but with joy just the same. And as for the swing itself, I found two free plans, and one for sale, in just a few minutes online. The two free plans were from Build Eazy and Black & Decker, and the one for sale was from WoodCraftPlans.com. Dunedin, Florida: Father & Son Enjoy The Pinellas Trail With Bike & Trailer

I was taking my lunch break to get out of the office and shoot some fresh color in Delightful Downtown Dunedin today. I hadn't thought to bring cool clothes to change into, so I was wearing my 'Dockers uniform'. It was HOT. That didn't stop me from enjoying my walking photo safari, but it didn't add a lot of fun to it.

So I was pretty psyched for this man and his son when I saw them lounging in the shade, just off the Pinellas Trail. What an AWESOME way to spend some quality time together. I can imagine the memories that little kid will grow up with. Nice! Even better, the father was okay with me taking a picture of the two of them. So if you know this man, tell him I said thanks again. And tell him you saw him on Dunedin Daily Photo!

Meanwhile, next time you are trying to think of something fun to do with your children or other family member, don't forget the Pinellas Trail that runs right through Downtown Dunedin. It's a great trail to enjoy, whether walking, skating or bicycling, with great places to stop and eat or shop along the way. And yes, it comes DANGEROUSLY close to Strachan's Ice Cream shop!

Clearwater, Florida: Sun-N-Fun Festival Disc Golf Tournament At Coachman Park

Sunday marked the end of the 2010 Sun-N-Fun Festival Disc Golf Tournament in Clearwater, at Coachman Park. The weather was great for flinging discs, and it seemed like most people had a really good time. I got to learn a little more about disc golf, a rapidly growing sport indeed! This sport is going nuts. Let me say this to folks reading this article, if you don't already have a disc golf course in your town right now, you can just about bet that one is in the works, or will be soon. It's just plain fun, and very, very accessible to anyone who wants to have some fun. And let's not ignore the style factor! Check out the player in the picture above. I love his style, both putting and fashion.

But don't get me wrong, these folks are also very serious about their game, in a good way. They have some of the funnest gear, like the buggies you see in the photo above. I mean, how many of you would LOVE an excuse to cruise around with that buggy, complete with a Tommy Bahama umbrella? Talk about living large!! I love it!

Dunedin, Florida: Night Flight Disc Golf!

I want to tell you all about two cool new things I have been learning about lately. Disc Golf, and Lighted Disc Golf. Disc Golf is all about throwing discs that are like Frisbee discs on steroids, into baskets made of steel and chains. You play on a course with multiple baskets, much like a regular golf course. I didn't know much about it several months ago, but it turns out there are courses all over the place. There are several in Pinellas County, with at least two listed in Dunedin! That's right, there is one listed at St. Andrews Links Golf Course (18 holes), and another listed at Hammock Park (9 holes).

Lighted Disc Golf is the same as Disc Golf, but you attach tiny little LED lights to your discs, and insert LED basket lights in the baskets, and play IN THE DARK. Very cool. The man in the picture above is Daniel Schultz. He is the man behind Night Flight Disc Golf. He didn't invent Disc Golf, or the idea of playing in the dark, but he did come up with some really cool lights for your discs and baskets. Click here to visit his website. And if you are interested in checking it all out, this coming weekend, May 1 and 2, there will be a Disc Golf tournament as part of the Fun-N-Sun Festival at Northeast Coachman Park in Clearwater.

Dunedin, Florida: A Nice Day For A Bike Ride

What's right about this picture? What's not right about this picture?

Well. among other things, I am still a chicken when it comes to taking pictures of people. Oh yeah, I'm a downright hero when it comes to taking pictures of their backs, or backsides. But I still have trouble taking a picture when they can see me taking it, and have only once had the courage to ask someone outright. Hahaha, and first I circled them three times like some kind of stalker.

Meanwhile, hurray for the man on the bicycle. Good for him. Of course, for all I know, he rides a bike because he got a DUI or something. In the meantime, hurray for him.

What's life about, after all? Any ideas? Not too sure myself. I have some ideas. Some inklings. Does it matter if we know? Are we just supposed to do our best to survive, and then die anyway? Higher purpose? I don't think we have access to any such thing as a higher purpose. I'd like to think so. But I have my doubts. Perhaps I'll go play a video game for a while to clear my head. Or go watch some more TV.

Dunedin, Florida: Heavy Equipment: Ring Power CAT 928G

I got a glimpse of this mid-sized monster while on my break walk one day, and I just had to snap a shot. Then it got even better, so I got two shots, and now I just can't resist posting them both! What a machine! I think the second shot, which may have been the first one I snapped, is even more fun because the driver seems to be giving me this look... like what the heck??

And hey, if you get a little giggly when you see one of these, and start thinking like I do... forget it. Unless you have a spare $40,000 lying around. Which, if you do, will by you a 12 year old model. If you want a new one, you will need almost 4 times that much. That's right, a new one will set you back around $150,000. But hey, if you got it, why not?

I was enjoying a walking photo safari one day when I found myself in a small neighborhood of beautiful older homes, just south of downtown Dunedin. I think this might be considered a craftsman style bungalow. Although it may have outgrown the bungalow part just a little, what with being two stories and all.

There's not a lot about this house that I don't like. The architecture is beautiful. Well, perhaps I might not have chosen that color, but I can't say it really looks all that bad seeing it on the house now. But I have never been all that good at picking paint colors anyway.

No, I don't seem to be able to resist taking more pictures at the Marina, especially when it is a day as beautiful as this one. Talk about blue sky and fluffy white clouds! This is what we are talking about when we brag about how beautiful this area is.

Ever feel like you just need someone to hang on to? Something you can really get hold of? That is what, in my opinion, HARDWARE is all about. Hardware is always there when you need it. What would the world do without hardware? The world would fall apart without it, that's what! Speaking for myself, I am a member of the Hardware Hoarders Club. That's right. I officially have more than I can probably ever use over the course of my lifetime... But I'm working on it! :)

What about you? Do you dig hardware too? Think about it, we use that word for all sorts of different meanings. Of course, there is basic hardware, like screws and nails and such. But sometimes hardware refers to weapons. Other times it's just computer equipment. I can remember using hardware to mean braces on your teeth. What else? I bet you have some more examples too. Don't you!

How do you feel about BLUE? Ever seen this logo before? No, it's not the Illuminati... It's the logo for the International Optimist Dinghy Association. IODA for short. And according to that website, "The optimist is, quite simply, the boat in which the young people of the world learn to sail".

So, if you have a child who is interested in sailing or sailboats, perhaps you want to check out the International Optimist concept of sailing. It seems like it might be a great way to get your child interested in something more than video games, not to mention the social skills and confidence they will develop while they're having all that fun. Needless to say, I am pretty sure they have a club in Dunedin, based at the Dunedin Marina.

Work is everywhere. It makes the world go round. Even in our most basic form, we must work or die of starvation. Work. It's good for you. Really!

A nice day at the Dunedin Marina still requires someone to be working. In this case, it looks like there are some Florida Department of Transportation employees nearby. I'm not real sure if they have anything to do with the marina. They may be there, like I was, to enjoy the serenity of the small park, and to gaze upon the beauty of all the yachts and sailboats. If you're in the area, and have a little time, you might find it enjoyable to stop by the marina and go for a walk. The weather makes it quite appealing this time of year.

What's with all the security? Are they afraid we'll steal the boats? Run off with their rope? Loot the bilge and abscond with their rum? Naw, it's nothing like that... they just haven't got to their spring cleaning yet, and they don't want us to see the mess! And hey, I got messes of my own, so I can relate COMPLETELY!

Seriously though, all in all, considering her age, I think Sails Lady is looking pretty good. If you are wondering, she is a product of Morgan Yachts. In fact, she is a centerboard sloop, built in 1970, a Morgan 38. Cool, eh? Yeah, it's amazing what you can find on the internet!

I guess I should have guessed there was work afoot when I saw this trailer full of lumber. But it was really more 'afloat' than afoot... hahaha. I can tell you, when I see a stack of wood like this at my house, it can only mean one thing: lots of hard work on the coming weekend. And sure enough, as you can see in the photo below, there was definitely some hard work going on. But I suppose I can see some appeal in a job like this. No, I don't think I would enjoy it year after year... but there are days when I am sitting in my office, wishing I was somewhere else. My friends and family are quick to remind me how lucky I've got it. And I suppose they're right, really.

I snapped this total poser of a duck (that's Muscovy Duck) while walking around Lake Paloma. I tell you, he was totally posing! The more I snapped, the more he posed. Hmmm, come to think of it, it might have been a FEMALE duck! lol

I gotta tell you, when you see this little lake for the first time, Lake Paloma, you might think it's just another overgrown (barely) pond. I mean, it really isn't all that big. BUT... I see some of the coolest birds in the lake, or in the vicinity. Here's a list of all the different birds I have seen in my last couple of walks around and near the lake: Muscovy Duck, Mallard Duck, Mottled Duck, Wood Duck, White Heron, Great White Heron, Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Kingfisher, Osprey, Crested Night Heron, Bald Eagle (FOR REAL!), Gallinule, Blue Jay, Starling, Crow, Grackle, Mockingbird, Cardinal, and I am sure I am forgetting at least two more.

A simple shot, a simple image, a simple thing. Keeping it real in Purple Heart Park. This is right in Downtown Dunedin. Not a big, sprawling, we're better than you, park. A simple small park to acknowledge the incredible sacrifice made by so many of our military personnel. After all, no park or monument is big enough, or grand enough, or heart-wrenching enough to do justice to their sacrifice. Good to see some of Dunedin's fine city employees taking care of this special place.

Hats off to all those serving or who served. Remember them with pride, respect and gratitude. For without the dedication and sacrifice of those willing to bear arms, we would not be living in such a wonderful (yes, even with its bumps and warts) country. Oh, and let's hear it for #44, P.B.O.!

Litter Sucks, And So Do The People Who Do It!

Trash... garbage... litter... refuse... debris... junk... crap... I hate it. I hate the damned stupid morons who think it's okay to just chuck it out the window, or drop it onto the street. Who the hell do they think they are? Where are their parents?

Here are my ideas about this: Everyone, I mean EVERYONE, is issued a weapon. Some sort of gun. Then, whenever ANYONE sees ANYONE throw trash, or litter, or whatever you want to freaking call it, they MUST SHOOT THEM ON SIGHT! If they kill them, they get a bonus, if they simply wound them, they get a minimal bounty. All this would be backed up by the films from nearby security cameras (the ones the world is becoming more and more populated with).

IF you see someone litter and don't shoot them, we cut off one of your toes. In addition, if you are seen littering, we find your parents and cut off one of their toes. And another thing, look out Budweiser, we start penalizing companies if their product is littered more than others. Yeah, that's right, the cigarette companies would be in even MORE BIG TROUBLE!

And anyone who doesn't like this plan, or who refuses to participate (like refusing to carry their gun) would be chained to a damned garbage truck so they can pick up the freaking trash all day.

Next time, let's talk about licensing childbirth!

Well, the big day has come and gone, and we are all watching and listening to learn just what it will really mean to us all. More voters turned out on that one day than most other voting days in history. More people were engaged with the process than ever before. Where you?

This is a shot I snapped on Voting day while on walking photo safari in Dunedin. I found it interesting to see the blue "X" on the sidewalk, and guess that it is there to make sure that anyone there to lobby for their candidate remained the legally determined distance from the entrance to the polling place.

So I post this shot for the pleasure of my northern friends and visitors. Yes, I will miss the concept of snow this winter, and wish we had more of a season, but I cannot deny that NOT freezing is not always all that bad. Dunedin, Florida: INSPIRATION: Dominique Benassi of France: Ironman World Championship 70.3

This is Dominique Benassi of Bastia, France. This, and more, I learned from the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 website. He is 47, an Electrician. As you may have noticed, he has only one leg. He finished the Ironman, swimming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13.1 miles, with a rank of 586 out of 1,254.

I don't know much more about him, but this is all I need to know to be COMPLETELY INSPIRED! I didn't expect that when I walked, with my two good legs, down the street to stand, with my two good legs, and watch the athletes ride by on their bicycles. I never expected to see a man with only one leg competing in one of the hardest races on this planet. Incredible! My hat is off to Dominique Benassi.

Dunedin, Florida: Big Truck: Ford F450 Super Duty Dually

What in the heck is this, a street legal Monster Truck? No, I guess not quite. But it is a big beautiful truck. Even if you think it is a gas hog, you cannot deny that these trucks have a purpose. They are not always used to good purpose enough to justify the gas, but many times they are. And when we all figure out how to convert our vehicles to burn water or air, it won't matter how big it is!

I will, however, admit... these big rigs can be a real PAIN to park! I mean, let's face it, if you are driving one of these, you are not squeezing into those small parking spaces you find up close to the store! But out here on Dunedin Causeway, where I snapped this Ford F450 Super Duty Dually while on a lunch break, there is plenty of room and good use for such a rig. I bet that thing could pull yachts out of the water all day without breathing hard!

Hey, you gotta remember... this is FLORIDA! :) So this is just the kind of thing you might see out on Dunedin Causeway during a lunch break.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure this one out. I mean, not that people his age can't enjoy riding a motorcycle, especially such a dressed up Kawasaki like this one, but you don't usually see them dressed like this! Oh, and I LOVE the cigar thing. Not just the one in his mouth, but the two additional ones in his shirt pocket. It never hurts to be prepared!

Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Causeway: Sailboats & Powerboats Mixing It Up

With reality TV all the rage, and all the drama and trauma that is used to sell advertising, it's easy to see conflict in this photograph. There are those on the water who want to enjoy the peace and tranquility that a sail driven boat provides. There are those on the water who want to enjoy the thrill and the rush that comes from screaming across the waves to the roar of internal combustion engines. It seems like a situation ripe for conflict.

BUT... what this picture really shows is that here in Florida, and here in Dunedin, and ESPECIALLY out here on the Dunedin Causeway, there is ample opportunity for everyone to enjoy life at whatever pace suits them best! If you want to go fast, GO FAST! If you want to slow down and smell the salt spray, then slow down and relax. Just please, be SAFE, and respect each other. Then we all have a good time, no matter our pace.

PS. Today is ELECTION DAY! So... make your vote count. Make your voice heard. If you are voting for my guy, get out and vote. If you are voting for the other guy, stay home, relax, we'll take of everything! :)

Bring your own, or rent one. Lots of people enjoy blazing across the waters around Honeymoon Island. In the background, the condos and resorts of Clearwater Beach confirm your presence in a paradise of sunshine and seaside fun.

"... Betty Jo was startled to see something rising up in the water beneath her as she sped along. She twisted the throttle hard to get past the object so it would not strike the bottom of her jet ski. It rattled her to see the large shape looming up out of the blue-green water.

It broke the surface just behind her, and she screamed. It was a hand. Not just any hand. It was a HUGE hand! It was big enough to hold her jet ski in it like a bar of soap. She gunned it hard and sped away, watching over her shoulder as the hand rose out of the water, clutching at thin air as water drained off of it like a waterfall.

With a jolt, Betty Jo realized it was trying to grab her. Suddenly her blood ran cold. What now? What next? The hand turned slowly in her direction and sunk below the water's surface. This was not good. She didn't know where it was now, but she was sure it wasn't gone for good. She turned her craft toward the shore and gunned it again. There, ahead of her, it was coming up again, rising up from whatever dark depths had kept it hidden before now. She shrieked as she twisted the throttle as far as it would go and the hand shot up toward her speeding craft..."

Dunedin, Florida: Kiwanis Park Benches With A Waterfront View

In Dunedin, just off Alternate Highway 19, you can find some neat little parks. Many are nothing more than a couple of benches, a plot of grass, a seawall, and an awesome waterfront view. They may not seem like much to an athletinaut, but if you can find some quiet space in your mind, they are a great place to sit and ponder the universe. Of course, if you can't get your mind quiet, sitting and watching the water move for a while might help with that.

"... Mathilde smiled a tiny little smile of satisfaction as she reached the park and walked the narrow wavy sidewalk to the water's edge. She was alone in the small space, just her, the benches, the grass, and that wide blue-green expanse of water. Nothing there to distract her. Nothing to keep her from her appointment, her date.

Her curly white hair shifted only slightly in the sea breeze. The wrinkles on her lightly tanned face asserted her place in the history that had been her life so far. She folded tired hands in her lap, rested her stiff back against the green cradle of the bench. She felt the heat of the sun soaking into her body, her soul. It felt good. 'Surely', she mused, 'I must have some plant life in my bloodline'. The irony made her smile.

Settled now, she relaxed into an easy, comfortable vigil, staring out over the water. Her eyes lost their focus, as if she were looking at nothing. The nearer sounds slowly faded away, leaving the distant cries of the seagulls and the soft murmuring of the waves against the sea wall. Then, as she sat there in a trance like state, nearly oblivious of her surroundings, he slowly appeared before her.

She grinned broadly, like a young woman welcoming the appearance of her lover. 'Clarence, darling', she murmured. He took her hand, bent, and kissed it. She sighed deeply. A passing jogger wondered briefly at the lone, old woman sitting on the bench gesturing. Clarence sat down next to Mathilde, and she lay her head on his shoulder. 'It seems like I haven't seen you in so long Clarence', she whispered, 'I've missed you so'. He put his arm around her shoulders. 'I know darling, I know'..."

I don't know about you... but I think that looks a little like Michael Phelps on that there boat! Maybe the waters off Dunedin's Honeymoon Island Beach ARE his secret training waters? And maybe they need a boat that fast to keep up with him when he is in training?

"... 'But coach, why CAN'T I swim this fast in competition? I mean, I'm good, you know I am, and I'm faster than ANY of them!' Michael whined to his coach.

'Yes, I know you are, but remember, if they find out you have gills, and if anyone actually SEES you swimming as fast as a dolphin, the Navy with snatch you up for experiments and you will never see daylight again!'

'Now, get back in the water and show me your really slow stroke, the one we worked out where you will win the meet, but only just'..."

Okay, okay, that was another outrageous lie. There were not millions of people there. Heck, I doubt there were more than a thousand or two. But it really was quite enjoyable. At least, for most of us...

"...Richard wandered through the crowds of happy antiques shoppers, scanning the faces of every person he passed, as well as the inventories of each table. "It has to be here," he muttered to himself. And if it isn't, he thought, surely THEY must be here. One or the other, he calculated, one or the other would be here, if not both.

A photo-inspired story.

Marie was having such a wonderful time she could almost forget about the life she led at home for a while. Martin had been an absolute gentleman all evening, and was treating her like a princess in a storybook. She sighed deeply, and then tightened her grip as the whirling carnival ride jerked suddenly in a different direction.

She felt Martin's hand wrapped over hers on the restraining bar holding them in their seats. It was a hand that was both gentle and strong, and it made her feel warm and safe. It was not a feeling she was used to. She smiled widely, and remembered all the times she had come to the OLL Fall Festival that had never felt quite so wonderful as this time!

Martin had seemed to accept the things about her life and family that she was always so ashamed of. He didn't seem to mind at all that, at 27, she was living with her parents again after her divorce. But she still had him pick her up down the street, so she could enjoy this one evening out with him before he met her father. Her father was the last thing on her mind when they walked off the ride and she saw him striding purposefully toward her...

This past weekend was the weekend for the Our Lady of Lourdes Fall Festival, also know as the OLL Fall Festival. So if you were thinking of attending, but didn't make it by yesterday, I'm sorry you missed it. It was nice to get there early, before the worst of the heat and the crowds. We had a nice time wandering about, snapping pictures and checking out the deals.

When I was reviewing my photos, this one of the Flea Market tent morphed into a story from the recent news, and turned into one of my Outrageous Lies...

"... Recent news reports confirm sightings of Jillian Michaels, professional trainer on The Biggest Loser, rummaging through the clothes tables at the OLL Fall Festival in Dunedin, Florida. Shocking as that was, we were doubly surprised to find she was accompanied by no other than Joe the Plumber! That's right! Evidently, she is working with Joe the Plumber as a personal trainer, and now that he's lost so much weight, she is showing him how to save money when you suddenly have to replace your entire wardrobe. When asked why he decided to hire Jillian Michaels, Joe responded "Well, ever since Barack Obama has been talking about me on his Presidential Campaign trail, I have been making public appearances, and so I wanted to look my best... "

Okay, it's true, that is not Michael Phelps. And I doubt he has ever heard of Honeymoon Island, here in Dunedin, Florida. But it's a fun thought! That guy is awesome!

Dunedin, Florida: Street Signs Mark The Spot

If you can find these two signs on the same post, then you have found it: Downtown Dunedin, Delightful Dunedin, Good Old Small Town Dunedin.

From here, you can walk in any of four directions and enjoy the sights and sounds of Dunedin. South and East from here you will find a delightful collection of shops and restaurants. North from here will take you to an additional variety of delicious restaurants. West will bring you to the waters edge. That includes a beautiful park and the Dunedin marina. Get out of your car. Walk about. You'll love it. :)

This is a good example of the kind of homes I like... shaded by wonderful oak trees. No, sorry, not such a big fan of the palm tree or the cactus, although they all have their places. It's those beautiful oak trees that catch my eye. I love them!

I love that this house is a color other than beige. Kind of like the yellow house... something other than the same old thing. It doesn't hurt that I think this is a good looking house in general.

Sorry to say though, this house is not for sale. At least it was not when this photograph was snapped. In this crazy market, you just never know when something is going up for sale.

If you're like me, and you find the Four Reel in yesterday's post even beyond the means of your daydreams, maybe this is more our speed? But then, a Bass Tracker in the Gulf Of Mexico? Maybe they're after sea bass! :)

But then, the other name on the side of the boat (click to see it larger) is Pro Crappie 175. I really don't think you can find any crappie out there. But hey, what do I know? Still, seems like a nice boat to be able to buzz around in, if you stay close to shore that is. And how about that blue stretching away to forever behind them... cool.

Dunedin, Florida: Four Reel Silverton Heading Out To Sea

If you get tired of playing tag with the waves on the beach, you can head out into the Gulf of Mexico for some serious fishing. This is the Four Reel, snapped as she headed out through Hurricane Pass and into the Gulf.

According to sources I found through Google, Four Reel is a 2000 Silverton yacht, registered in Palm Harbor. She is 46.5 feet long, and I think she is designated as a 42. I wouldn't want to have to fill her tanks these days, but she is a fine looking vessel! I'm guessing you could get a LONG way out in the Gulf with her!!

I had lunch with my beautiful niece the other day. Although grown and graduated from college now, I can remember her as a much younger girl. Life is an amazing adventure.

Have you been to the Dunedin Marina in the evening lately? It's really nice. The sunsets from the pier are awesome, and just as nice as from the beach, without having to manage all that traffic.

That being said, it's also nice to get down to the beach to. Hey, don't forget Honeymoon Island Beach. Although the main beach can be a bit rocky, the pet beach is really quite nice in my experience.

I have to admit, this house reminds me of a paint company commercial. I mean, WOW, that is a YELLOW HOUSE! I wonder if there is anything inside referring to the Beatles Yellow Submarine?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad color at all. But I do feel a bit overpowered when I look at it for any length of time. I just don't think I would have the courage to paint my house that color. Of course, at least nobody is going to walk off with it, you could spot them a mile away!

If you are a baseball fan, you know what this sign is all about. Not to belittle it's roll as the location of the recent, and for Dunedin historic, rally featuring the Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Did you make it to the rally?

But more importantly, Knology Park, or Knology Field, is home to the Toronto Blue Jays for Spring Training! Sounds like a pretty good combo if you ask me... a vacation to Dunedin, Florida to enjoy this beautiful area, and a chance to take in a few Toronto Blue Jays games during Spring Training at Knology Park.

Now, as it happens, I seem to pass by this house several times a week. Based on what I see happening now and then, I am pretty sure it is a rental. Too bad it doesn't have a garage anymore. It's not uncommon to see people convert garages to living space.

It's kind of deceptive looking from the front, in that it seems kind of small, but according to the tax records, it has over 2,000 square feet! And if you are wondering about the value of Dunedin Real Estate, the tax appraiser has this house at $187,700 Just/Market value. That translates into more than $3,600 in property taxes! Oh, and the lot size is 75x152.

Dunedin, Florida: Jeep Spotting At The Marina: Jeep Wrangler Sport

When I saw this Jeep Wrangler Sport at the Dunedin Marina recently, it seemed like something right out of a Jeep television commercial. With the soft tops all peeled off, and the bright yellow color with the shiny clean wheels, it just seems to shout "Buy me, I'm FUN!"

How about that license plate on the front bumper, eh? That's right, it says U.S. Marines! Nothing but respect for our folks in uniform. No matter what I think about the politicians that send them to war, no matter what I think about whether or not we should be there, I respect them for putting it on the line for the rest of us. Thank you Armed Forces!

Meantime, I've never owned a Jeep, at least not yet. I've thought about it. I think my brother had one once, but not me. It could be fun. But these days, I think I would want to find one with a four cylinder! (Oops, just hit the digital highway and found tons of them right here in the Dunedin area.)

It seemed like such simple thing... take a picture of a beautiful flower blooming in someone's front yard. Well, that was the simple part! Trying to convert my knowledge of its common name into a website link for the post was another adventure altogether.

There are lots and LOTS of plants that have very similar names to Rain Lily and Zephyr Lily. Also, once you narrow it down, you find LOTS of different versions of the family. I believe the scientific name of this beautiful plant is Zephyranthes grandiflora. That is according to information I found on the USDA Plants Database website. Anybody out there know different?

"Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama will hold a public rally in Dunedin on Wednesday while he’s here preparing for the first presidential debate.

Doors will open for the rally at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Knology Park.

Tickets are not required, but attendees are urged to RSVP at Obama’s Florida campaign Web site, www.fl.barackobama.com.

Obama is expected to be in the area from Tuesday through Thursday preparing for his debate with Republican Sen. John McCain on Friday in Mississippi."

Lake Paloma, Dunedin, Florida. It's just a small little lake in an out-of-the-way corner of Dunedin. But it is pretty, and relatively peaceful. Surrounded by a cozy little neighborhood, with a variety of housing styles and values.

I was fortunate to catch this beautiful sunset over the Dunedin Marina recently. It's a very Florida scene; the palm trees, all the boats, the open waters and the low landmass in the distance. Let's face it, this is a big part of why people love to live here.

Ya know, it is SO easy to forget how beautiful it is outside. We all get so terribly caught up in the day to day struggles of mortgage payments, feeding our families, and keeping our jobs... It won't solve all your problems, but I can tell you this, if you can get out to some fresh air somewhere; a park, the marina, a beach or the causeway, it may just lighten the load on your soul somewhat. You are not alone.

This is the scene they have set outside the Dunedin Historical Society Museum. These are some old traveling cases, loaded onto some sort of old wagon. I think I have some old family stuff in storage, that looks a little like these. Oy!

This being 2008, any such place needs to have its accompanying sign warning folks not to use up the place and damage it. However, it is nice to see that there are some public restrooms available nearby! The museum is located in the middle of the Downtown Dunedin district.

It's true! Gang activity right here in Dunedin! These ducks are a real treat to see here at the pond. They seem to be doing well, and growing in numbers.

Hopefully people will not decide that the ducks are too happy, and decide they have to go. That's how people get, it seems, they get so they don't like to see ducks getting happy and doing well and having families. I hope they leave this group alone.

Did you know... The Coca-Cola company has an orange juice concentrate facility in Dunedin, Fl? Yup, they do. Long ago, this plant belonged to Hood Dairy. Then it eventually came to be owned by the Minute Maid company. Now it is owned by Coca-Cola. They make a lot of orange juice concentrate there every year.

Who'd a thunk it, eh? What about you? Do you like Coca-Cola? Do you drink Minute Maid orange juice?

I don't know who is responsible for this yellow wall in Downtown Dunedin, but they did it right if you ask me. I love the texture, and the lines, and the great color. It may seem rather utilitarian, just being a wall, but they made it an attractive part of the Downtown atmosphere!

Maybe if someone out there knows who made this wall happen, you might leave me a comment, as I would love to give credit for this one. Meanwhile, I am off to look for more walls, more lines, more texture. Texture, of course, including just about anything and anyone I can catch in my viewfinder! :)

While loitering at the Dunedin Marina one day recently, I spotted this sharp looking scooter. As I crept closer and closer for a photograph, I realized it is an honest to gosh Vespa scooter!

So I snapped a few shots, and went on my merry way. Of course, now that I am posting the picture, I am wishing I had looked a little more closely to see what model it is. Oh well. I am slowly, slowly, learning to look beyond the initial snap, when I take it, and see what other information is to be had.

What this is... is another shot of the trail on Honeymoon Island. The hiking trail, or nature trail, has various turn around points so you can enjoy it a little longer if you'd like, or get back to your car sooner if you'd like. Honeymoon Island State Park.

I have been feeling the urge to get outside a bit more lately. But I have been stymied by work. So, since I can't get there in person, I decided to post some pictures of the kinds of places I would like to be. Why? Because I like to share these beautiful places with you all, so you can enjoy them too!

This photograph was taken out on Honeymoon Island, also known as Honeymoon Island State Park, while hiking the Nature Trail. It's a really awesome place, that gives you a deeply natural feeling. It's easy to get out there, the trail is easy to get to and easy to hike. Definitely a thumbs up recommendation on this trail!

Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Classic Jeep Wagoneer

Still on my action photography kick here. Another in the series from that street corner. As the cable guy says: "I could do this all day." But don't worry, I'll let it be for a bit after today. I don't want anyone out there to get motion sickness from too many moving pictures!

As I review these shots, I think I might be getting the hang of this action snapping thing. It's cool to see how one particular area seems to come into focus so well, while the rest is blurred by the movement. I guess it is about getting my panning speed and focus lined up right. What fun. As near as I can tell, this is a classic Jeep Limited Wagoneer.

As I mentioned earlier, there was the one man I photographed as he rode by on his motorcycle who did not look really happy. I don't know if he was suspicious of me and my camera, or just having a serious moment.

Again, though, I do not know what kind of motorcycle it is: Harley Davidson? Suzuki? Kawasaki? Honda? Yamaha? I don't know... and there are many more brands that might have a model like this one: Triumph, American Eagle, Buell, Confederate, Indian, Norton, and the list goes on and on.

Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Trailered Boat

Standing on a Downtown Dunedin street corner, near the Dunedin Marina, practicing my action photography, I snapped this neat looking boat. I don't know where it was heading, or where it came from, but I am pretty happy with how that shot turned out. Thank you Nikon! Let's here it for being able to preview the shot immediately.

This turns out to be a great way, for me, to practice the panning action shot. I can stand there on the corner and snap away at people in cars. Some give me strange looks, many never even notice I am there. Later, I will post a snap of a man on a motorcycle who didn't really look all that happy about me photographing him. But then, maybe he was thinking about something else entirely.

Okay, not really flying. Okay, didn't really hit the building. But hey, life is short, make up stories! (Yeah, didn't see that coming, did you?)

So, the awesome bead covered bicycle is hanging out on this building, adorning their bicycle rental and sales business. Rentals? you say? Yes! This building is located right next to the Pinellas Trail! And once you rent your bicycle and hit the trail, many wonderful destinations are just a short pedal away. More on that in future posts.

What in the heck? That is what I was thinking as I came upon the object in today's image. I am sure you can see that it is a bicycle... but are those spikes coming out of the rear tire? Is that snake skin all over it? Is it flying? What the heck?

I snapped this picture just across the road from The Dunedin Woodwright. I first saw this strange looking barge when I was stuck in the minor traffic jam that resulted when it was being backed into its parking space. Looks interesting to me. So I thought I would share it.

The fact is, though... I got nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Bumpkus! So enjoy the picture, make up nice stories about the barge if you like. Or even nefarious and evil stories if you like. And if any of you go nuts and actually find a website for Ress Marine on the internet somewhere, let me know, and I will post it. :)

I pass this building several times a week, when I go for a Downtown Dunedin Lunch. Every time I go by, I think about getting a picture, because I love the way it looks. This is the kind of house I would buy in a heartbeat if I could.

But more importantly, this is the home of The Dunedin Woodwright. High end furniture, as I understand it. Sadly, there is no website to link you to! Something I will have to contact them about rectifying! ;) I love real woodwork. I hate that I can't afford it. Yet.

I was standing in Downtown Dunedin the other evening, practicing my moving-subject snapography, when this way cool couple went gliding by. I was looking through my camera the whole time, and she kept her peace sign up as they approached and passed me. I was so impressed. What cool people I thought.

As to the bike, I am afraid none of the shots are good enough to be sure what the make is. It would be natural to assume that it is a Harley Davidson, but I don't know for certain that it is not a Honda or a Yamaha or some other new brand that makes Harley style motorcycles.

Something about this scene draws me in. I so want to be sitting up on that second floor deck. Or balcony. Or terrace. Or veranda or WHATEVER it's called. It just looks like such a comfortable place to relax.

Now that's saying a lot, because I really don't go for that kind of architecture generally. But this place really looks neat. Of course, some of that has to come from the way cool landscaping. I mean, it might be a little out of control here and there, but I like it!

Dunedin, Florida: Frank Gregoire, Ron Walker Election Signs

I admit it, I don't know a thing about these two guys. But it seems like they have a fan. I can tell you this: Frank Gregoire wants to be the Pinellas County Appraiser, and Ron Walker wants to be on the School Board. I am not sure why anyone would want to be those things... but perhaps this is how these two have decided they can help.

I don't know that I would ever want to run for a public office. Like most people, I suppose, I occasionally fantasize about being in those positions and making things better. But I don't know that I would be willing to fight through the election process and deal with the way campaigns seem to be run these days. Oh well, cancel the Me For Prez signs. :)

It's really just an ordinary house. There is nothing grandiose about it. There is nothing rare or spectacular about it. But then again...

I am a garage/workshop kind of guy. So when I saw this little house in Dunedin with it's one car garage in front... AND a two car garage out back... I fell in love. I mean, for a small, typical house in an affordable neighborhood, it just doesn't get any better!

Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Dunedin Purple Heart Park

It never ceases to amaze me how things come together sometimes. Last week I posted a picture of a clock from Purple Heart Park, in Downtown Dunedin. I confessed that I knew nothing about the park, and promised I would keep my eyes open next time I was downtown. Well that came sooner than later, and I took several pictures the other day, so that I could post them here. And then...

Today Gloria left me a comment on the post about the park. It would seem she has all the scoop, and here it is:

On August 7, 2008, the City of Dunedin was honored through the dedication of the new Purple Heart Park just north of the intersection of Main Street and Edgewater Drive. The park is right next to the SunTrust bank branch on Alt 19. It is dedicated to all of our service people who have been given a Purple Heart. If you Google "Purple Heart Dunedin FL", you will be able to read all about it. Our friend, Al Lentz, who is the recipient of 2 Purple Heart awards and a veteran of two tours of duty in Viet Nam was instrumental in seeing this monument come to fruition. It took a lot of hard work on the part of the very veterans to whom we owe our freedom to see this project come to pass. Thank you to everybody involved. We love you Al :)
